LAGOS ENHANCES CAPACITY OF STAFF TO REDUCE INCIDENCES OF BUILDING COLLAPSE

Lagos State Government has said that its officials has been trained in the areas of Strengthening Distressed Buildings and the importance of proper foundation on stability of buildings as a way of equipping the workforce with the requisite knowledge needed to stem the tide of incidences of building collapse.

The Acting General Manager of Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory, LSMTL, Engr. Olalekan AJANI made this known on Wednesday during a training programme organised for staff of the Agency at the head office of the agency in Ojodu-Berger, Lagos.

According to the Acting General Manager, the purpose of the training was to sustain continuous capacity building for Staff of the Agency, stressing that the state Government believes that an informed workforce will be more effective in the discharge of its reposibilities.

He said “in line with the policy of the present administration of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on continuous capacity building for the entire public servants in Lagos State, the LSMTL, considering the importance of its functions has since the resumption of its operations in the course of the year embarked on series of training programmes targeted at improving the capacity and capabilities of all professionals and non-professionals in the Agency for effective service delivery.”

Ajani listed some of the training programmes earlier organised for the officials of the Agency to include; Efficient Non-Destructive Test Analysis and Report, the importance of quality flat sheet and steel Reinforcement materials in the construction industry, how to be an effective and efficient professional in prevention of building collapse, introduction of fibre reinforced concrete among others.

He stated that the state governmwnt expects that the acquired knowledge and experience gathered during the training programmes will equip the Agency’s staff and tactically reposition the Agency towards improving effective and efficient service delivery to the public.

While commending officials of the Agency for their sense of commitment shown in the discharge of their duties, the Acting General Manager called on them to continue to be an agent of change and be determined to surpass the present achievements of the Agency in the coming year.

He added that the Agency intends to improve on relevant trainings and seminars for that would further increase the capacity development of staff of the agency across all cadres in 2018..

The Facilitator for one of the training sessions and a renowned Engineer, Professor Funsho Falade, whose presentation was on “Strengthening of Distressed Buildings” described strengthening of byikdings as an improvement over the original strength of a building especially when the evaluation of the building indicates that the strength available before the damage was insufficient and restoration alone will not be adequate in future quakes.

He maintained that in order to avoid disturbance to the integrity of the existing wall during the foundation strengthening process, proper investigation and design remains indispensable.
